5 Unpopular Fashion Trends and How to Style Them.

Everyone has their own style and preference when it comes to fashion. Every time a new trend emerges and takes the media by storm, we are introduced to different trends, but we don't always love them all. At DSM, we are firm believers that if you like something, you should wear it, and we will always give you the very best practical advice on how to wear what you love. So here are 5 not-so-popular fashion trends and how to style them.

1. Mini & Micro Bags

You've probably seen this trend from many fashion brands like Jacquemus, Valentino, Tom Ford, and more. Size is the main reason many people dislike this trend. It's difficult to think of it as a practical bag, so you might be wondering, what’s the point?

Mini bags are already considered too small for some, you might be able to fit your phone, some cash, or maybe your keys. But compared to micro bags, they actually have plenty of space. Micro bags popularized by designer Jacquemus in his fall 2017 collection, designs vary between 2 inches to 3 inches.

Despite how impractical this accessory may seem, you see it everywhere: on runways, and streets, Celebrities like Lizzo, Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Priyanka and more have been seen rocking it everywhere.

We propose you think of this accessory as a complementary piece in your outfits rather than a container for carrying things. The same way you would wear jewelry, to enhance the look.

How to style this trend:

  • For an added pop of color to your outfit.

  • To complement another accessory in your look. Pairing accessories with your mini bag can elevate the look

  • To add personality to a muted look. When your colors are neutrals or darks, choose a bold mini bag to stand out.

2. Patchwork Clothes

The patchwork trend is known for its unique combinations of quilted, paneled, or patched garments that add depth to any outfit.

The style has been criticized for being messy and difficult to pair, but it has continued to be popularized by multiple Celebrities like Harry Styles, Jennifer Lopez, and many more. Commonly associated with the Neo-bohemian style, the look is catching steam across street fashion connoisseurs.

The Neo-Bohemian style is inspired by sustainability and reused fabrics, as well as supporting artisans around the world to create an earthy and crafty look. As a whole, we all understand the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry, so obviously, we love the origins of the trend and encourage everyone to try any trend that champions sustainability.

How to style this trend:

  • Don't overthink it. Just try it. Pair with your favorite existing pieces, and you might just come up with some unexpected artistic looks.

  • Utilize monochromatic combinations. By sticking to a color pallet, you can tone down the patch piece

  • Make just one item the central piece of your look. Most patchwork pieces are very eye-catching so pair them with more subtle pieces to make this work of clothing art shine in your look.

This trend hit its peak popularity in the 2000s. With its return in the fashion circles,  It is possible it will become just as popular once again; even with the strong rejection that exists for this style. It isn't particularly flattering for all body types and is also not the most comfortable.

How to style this trend:

  • Play it safe, pair it with classics like a white t-shirt.

  • If you don't feel comfortable wearing a short top with this style add a long top and tuck in or pair it with a belt.

  • Elevate your outfit by adding a belt and jacket to compliment the look.

It is common for 90s trends to be well received when they return. In this case, however, not everyone was a fan of the tiny sunglasses trend.

With a rise in popularity in recent years, many brands from designers to fast fashion retailers have added tiny sunglasses to their collections.

Despite the rejection of this style, many people who admire celebrities for fashion inspiration are eager to be able to afford a piece that resembles their favorite celebrity look. Let's take a look at how to style this unusual accessory.

How to style this trend:

  • Pick sunglasses that flatter your face shape.

  • Black and gray shades can go with every outfit giving you more ways to wear the trend

  • Coordinate the color of your glasses with your outfits.

The puffer trend has gotten out of control, and everything is puffing up, even phone cases. Quilted clothing was introduced on the runways in 2019, followed by celebrities wearing these puffed styles everywhere.

A BuzzFeed survey found that more than 70% of people have already grown bored of this trend. The functionality of puffer clothing is still very much needed so learning how to style these pieces is worthwhile.

How to style this trend:

  • Make it monochromatic, put together pieces with similar tones like a knit sweater, leather pants, and a puffer jacket all the same color spectrum.

  • Use the puffer as your color guide, pick the remaining pieces in your outfit based on the colors of your puffer.

  • Incorporate texture, to make your puffer look better, pick complementary pieces with different textures so the contrast is more intense, such as polka dot bottoms and long puffers.
