The five most essential coats every wardrobe should have

During a pandemic, our health is a top priority. The world is changing and more often than not, our fashion choices are reflecting our health priorities. One such focus is our mental health, so if you are going to invest in some new coats why not pieces that really change your outdoor experience and inspire you to get dressed, take a walk or participate in an outdoor activity of some sort while feeling great and comfortable of course. The bottom line, fresh air, and daily movement is good for our mental and physical health.

I took this conversation to CHCH Morning Live and shared the five most essential coats every closet should have. And we covered every season. Ideally, you should invest in coats that are timeless so you can wear them post-pandemic but inspire you. Every season is covered

Temperature graded down-filled puffer

Everyone who lives in Canada needs to own one. Not all puffer coats are made equal, so pay attention to the temperature grading from the manufacturer to determine your lifestyle needs. Water-resistance is an added bonus for those wet snow days.

Denim Jacket

The denim jacket is a timeless investment and the perfect layering piece. It comes in handy during spring or those summer evenings when there is a slight breeze. Personally, I like the grade of vintage denim, and thrift stores are a great place to hunt for the perfect jacket

A trench coat is a practical spring must-have, not only is it built to protect you from rain, it is light enough to become an easy go-to in late summer pre-fall weather. Layer with a denim jacket or pair it with a sweater and you are toasty enough to take on a drop in temperature. Its versatility takes you across looks, formal to casual.

Faux fur or Teddy coat

Adds personality to any casual look and elevates even the simplest t-shirt and jeans look. Wear it out running errands or a friend's date. Great for in-between seasons like early fall just before the severe winter kicks in.

Classic coat

For formal looks and in the right length, a coat is a practical choice to give you the best coverage in colder seasons. I recommend wool because of its natural insulation properties, unlike other materials. Although a neutral color like black or grey is a safe choice don’t be afraid to venture into colors like green or even patterns to add personality.

The great thing about each of these coats is they work pre, during, and post-pandemic, so are a practical investment and timeless pieces.
