Style Tips. 5 easy ways to add color and print to your closet
Talking about wearing colors and print seems an unlikely choice for a December style conversation.
But If you have heard of color theory, then you can appreciate the importance of color in relation to mood. If you haven’t heard of color theory, think of how hungry you get when that high contrast ad pops on your screen, or how you are definitely not sad when you see {even in an image}the rich tones of a sunset. That’s basically the psychology of color at work. So why not apply this color effect to your everyday life through your clothing selection, especially at this moment when quite frankly we all need a mood boost. This need for a pick me up inspired our most recent Style Segment on CTV Your Morning.
Consider this attending Style School where you learn practical #DSMStyleTips that you can apply right now even with your existing closet so that when you emerge post lockdown you will be a color/ print style pro.
Let’s get right to it.
Find inspiration around you, like from nature
Nature can be a great source of style inspiration because she never gets the whole color coordination thing wrong. We went with fall colors because it’s our favorite season but you can literally translate nature’s colors in any combination and you look great.
2. For an easy print look, build your look around a print you like
You can do this in two ways, if it’s a complex print like a floral, just select clothing in colors that are represented in that print. Alternatively, start with your inspired by nature look then replace one of the items with a printed piece. This works best for subtle prints like stripes, ginghams, or polka dots.
3. For print on print looks, always chose varying sized patterns.
The brain rejects what doesn’t make sense to the eye, so if it can’t differentiate the print that is not quite the same it just isn’t visually pleasing. Knowing this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t combine prints just make sure the two are different in size, if they are the same exact print or pattern style like a stripe with a floral
4. Combine colors that pop for a vibrant color block
The more vibrant the better! Again finding inspiration around you, select vibrant versions of those colors to add even more personality to your style.
5. Wear more of a color you love in one monochromatic look
In our books, the monochromatic look is the ultimate show of confidence, when done right of course. Doing it right is wearing the same color in different hues for visual versatility and taking it a step further by combining fabrics as well.
