Polyester. Facts every (stylish) person should know about the most widely used fabric in the world

I feel very strongly about polyester and try to avoid purchasing polyester clothing. But regardless of how I personally feel about it, my role is to educate so that you know a few things before you hit the clothing racks or sites.

This is an unpopular opinion blog article, but in a world where polyester continues to thrive in fashion, it only makes sense to present some facts about this widely used fiber.

Used beyond fashion

Let’s start with a positive. Because of its versatility and engineered properties, polyester is used across industries, not just fashion. which makes it one of the most widely used materials in the world.

Synthetic. Not natural

If I had a dollar for every time a store clerk told me polyester is natural, I would be rich. Most types of polyester are made from petroleum, this means it is man-made. If you didn’t know, now you know.

Not biodegradable

This is why I personally avoid it. Polyester doesn’t break down in soil which makes it a huge environmental concern. Almost every single item that has ever been made from it still exists today, let’s think about that for a minute.

A Pollutant at production and during use

It uses large amounts of water to produce. Polyester clothing releases fibers during washing and therefore contaminates water. So again, no bueno for the environment.

Inexpensive

In comparison to natural fabrics like cotton and wool, it is inexpensive and a cost-saver for fashion brands to acquire and use.

Often combined with natural fabrics to improve fabric properties

It is very resilient, dries quickly, and holds dyes well which is why it is blended with natural fibers like cotton to improve performance.

Realistically, polyester is in so many clothes not it’s hard to eliminate it from our closets completely but we believe it’s time we all made better decisions when it comes to fashion and this starts with knowing more than just how great pieces look.
